I launched my first business in 2007.
Here’s what happened:
The product was a rap tutorial.
Fun fact: I used to make money from battle raps. Like the movie 8 Mile.
My wife created a simple three-page website:
Sales page → Checkout page → Thank you page
At the time, I was working two jobs and was $6k in debt.
But we still got it built in less than a week.
Here’s what we didn’t do:
We didn’t build the product…
We didn’t use social media…
We didn’t spend money on anything (besides the domain and hosting)
Instead, here’s what we did:
We paid $100 for Google Ads around a single keyword.
No fancy campaigns or designs. Just one keyword:
“How to rap”
We had ZERO experience in marketing, so we kept things simple.
And the result?
We got an order for $197!
But we had a BIG problem…
We didn’t have a product!
We just wanted to see if anyone would buy.
And now that someone did, we had to deliver.
The pressure was on…
Despite working two jobs, I built the course in 3 days.
It was a TON of work—but we were excited to do it!
Once it was ready, we printed the course, put the audio on to CDs (!) and MAILED it to our first customer.
(Again, we didn’t know better.)
The sales kept coming in…
Nothing amazing… but we were making $1k/month.
Combined with my two jobs, I quickly got out of debt.
And within 9 months, we were happily married, and spent 9 months traveling through Asia.
All this happened in 2007…
Without any experience…
Without social media…
Without a product…
And it worked.
It’s never been easier to get started than now.
You just need to…
Pick a problem you had 2 years ago…
Find others with that problem…
Offer to solve it for them…
… And see if they buy.
If they do, you’ve got a business.
If they don’t, move on to something else.
It’s that simple.
